The Story of Crafty Betty

In September 2021 I was awarded Business Person of the Year at the Newark Business Awards! I made the Red Dress that I wore on the evening and I am so proud of it!

Michelle Baker - Owner Crafty Betty

Hello! I am Michelle Baker, founder of  Crafty Betty.
It all started in 2013 from a shed at the bottom of the garden and it was the best thing I ever did. After years of being a Teaching Assistant in the Art & Design Department of my former Secondary School, I took the plunge in 2008 and decided to return to University to train as a Teacher. At the time I was a single Mum to a four year old girl so I knew it would be a challenge but I knew I owed it to myself to give it a go - I had nothing to lose!
Roll on to 2011 and I found myself at Lincoln Cathedral graduating with a 2:1 Honours Degree in Secondary Education, one of the proudest days of my life!

Crafty Betty is now in it's 8th year after I left my job in a school to start teaching people to sew in local venues and shared studio spaces. Coming from a creative family, I have always crafted in some way. My Dad loves painting, my Mum sews and my Grandma Betty spent every school holiday patiently showing me how to create things. My Daughter is now an Art Student and a Part Time Member of staff - It is definitely a family affair!

I saw naming my business after my late Grandma Betty as a fitting tribute to a talented seamstress, knitter and renowned button collector that sadly is no longer with us.

Running Crafty Betty is really 'sew' much fun and it doesn't feel like a job. When I am not working  I can be found on the River Trent with my husband and family onboard our boat
