Tips for when your machine goes wrong.....

I get asked all the time what can is do when my machine chews up the thread and makes horrid noise. So I thought you might all benefit from a bit of inside knowledge and what to do if you find yourselves in this situation and a bit stuck yourself!

1) Thread your machine again..

The most common fault of a machine error is a thread has come off a hook, or you have missed something on your threading. So remove the thread and re do it. Often this solves the problem straight away.

2) Check the bobbin.

Often the bobbin can come out of the little groove for the thread to go through in the bobbin holder. This is the same for both top and front loading bobbins. If it is not inserted correctly then it won’t sew properly. Also check on front loading machines that the bobbin case clicked into place too.

3) When did you last change your needle?

Often the bobbin can come out of the little groove for the thread to go through in the bobbin holder. This is the same for both top and front loading bobbins. If it is not inserted correctly then it won’t sew properly. Also check on front loading machines that the bobbin case clicked into place too.

4)Are you using good quality thread?

Cheap and nasty threads can tangle up and cause problems with your machine. in the studio On a daily basis I use Coats Moon Threads, which are perfectly fine for everyday sewing. They retail at about 90p each and come in a wide range of colours.

5) When did you last clean your machine?

Like all appliances you need to keep them clean to keep them running efficiently. Make sure yo regularly defluff your machine, especially where the bobbin is inserted and in a front loading machine you will need to remove not just the bobbin case but also the metal parts behind to access the area where fluff gathers.
